I am the same when it comes to creativity being play and understand this completely. I am clearly way behind and you must be moving very soon now, so I hope it is safe and as smooth and easy as possible. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to catching up in Necromance (and any other fun projects you create)!
Well reading that was well timed I think, definitely needed to hear that!
Good luck with the move and have fun with the project hopping! Think that might be a good idea for me too (project hopping not moving), just once I finish doom scrolling ahem.
Look at you, whipping out that TL/DR! SOOOO excited for more projects from you, and best of luck with your move! May the paperwork gods be merciful!
Also, I think I read that article for a digital gamification course during my MSc! Totally agree that it’s essential to play with yourself. Often. Relentlessly. With jazz saxophone music.
Yep, play is important. Working in advertising, I totally get how difficult it can be to juggle all those balls, which are also, for good measure, sometimes on fire.
A while ago I just started taking a step back. Not stopping my writing, mind you. Work just started placing even more demands on me than before, so in order to still have a bit of private life outside writing and work, I had to cut back on time spent on writing-related social media. Especially over weekends.
I do still check in on a random Saturday/Sunday now and again but, generally, I'm setting out time to unwind and spend time with friends and loved ones. And if work was too hectic on a specific workday, then SM for that day gets reduced too.
It's not ideal but, first and foremost, I want to keep enjoying my writing and not burn out because I'm spinning my tires too hard for too long. So, just do what you can, and don't do what you... well, can't. Good luck, Ross!
Eaton, how brilliantly put! I think we're in an extremely similar place. Getting the balance right, and putting aside the 'right' thing is the tricky part. I'm spending a lot less time on social media as well, fortunately, certain megalomaniacal folks are making that an easier decision to make!
I get that too. I lost nearly 100 followers over the weekend alone due to people leaving because of that "folk", but generally I only check notifications from people I follow, which are mostly Writing Community peeps. So I hardly see the mainstream %&*$ flying around, which also helps with the whole sanity thing. Good luck finding your "right thing", Ross.
Wise words, I'll also second the importance of play. Like a very famous movie once said "all work and no play make Jack something something" or am I mixing up my sources there?

Thanks Rose! Hoping all's well with you, good luck with the substacking!
You’re welcome, and thank you!

🤣 we can class doomscrolling as 'play' right? RIGHT? oh...

🤣 there's always one, and it's ALWAYS YOU!! That course sounds like fun! You should make a game, a dark and terrifying game!!!!
🤣🤣🤣 I HAVE A REPUTATION TO UPHOLD! Omg my game would be like, it’s the apocalypse, and you have to fight off—NOPE, YOU’RE DEAD! 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 instant horrific death - THE GAME!
YES! 🤣🤣🤣
Bon Voyage & please take care of YOU. That beast gets to be troublesome & being gruel is still tough work my friend!
Less time on socials, more time caring for my friend please. As a PreK teacher, play is essential for everyone!
My teaching days are behind me but I 100% agree! Funny how something so crucial is considered superfluous - More play dammit!!
Yes Dammit PLAY PLAY PLAY!

🤣 Can’t believe I missed a chance to put that in there!!!
Clearly you haven't played enough otherwise you'd be on the ball 😁🤣
